The decorative design highlighted in this picture is a river leaf. Benin artists often used repeating patterns of river leafs to decorate the background on plaques. Scholars believe that the river leaves may also be symbols of Olokum, the god of the sea. It is thought that priestesses of Olokum used river leaves in healing rites.
