Europe's history is one of
diverse national identities. Its wars have
encompassed the continent as first its kingdoms,
and then its countries, fought over religion,
power, land, and trade. Perhaps most dramatically,
its conflicts erupted in two devastating world wars
during the 20th century. Shortly after World War II
ended, European leaders decided on a new direction
&endash; cooperation among nations &endash; that
led to the creation of the European Union, a
supranational organization that has not supplanted
nationalism, but has altered its members' policy
making practices substantially.
