Since the early 1990s, when radical
political changes transformed Eastern Europe, most of the
countries of Europe now have democratic political systems.
The new democracies join some of the oldest ones in the
world, such as Britain, who traces democratic roots to the
13th century, and France, whose revolution set democracy in
play in the late 18th century.
This section first investigate the
European Union &endash; a regional international
organization with fifteen member states &endash; and then
reviews and compares the political systems of Great Britain
and France.
